We are petrified and pissed off, angry and shaking. But under that we are hurt and heartbroken. Feeling undervalued is overwhelming. We can’t stay silent anymore.

MEDUSA’S STORY

Medusa is a celebrity of magical creatures. We all know her. Maybe you read about her as a Greek Gorgon in school. Or you saw her on a TV show or movie. No matter where you first encountered her, chances are that she was labeled as an ugly, vicious monster with bloodthirsty snakes for hair.

Well, Medusa is actually African, by way of Libya. This Berber goddess of wisdom’s rage is legendary. In many stories, Medusa was born a monster.

In the most famous tale, Medusa was a beautiful, loving priestess in the temple of Athena, the Greek goddess of war. Then Poseidon, Greek god of the sea, raped her on the floor of Athena’s temple. When Medusa ran to Athena for help, Athena turned her into a monster.

In some interpretations, Athena was protecting Medusa from men. In others, Athena was punishing her for the desecration of her temple. Either way, any man who laid eyes on her would be instantly changed into stone. In this new form, according to Roman poet Ovid, her hair raged as venomous snakes.

Medusa represents righteous rage and judgment. Her name has come to mean an ugly monster. A woman’s uncontrolled feelings are seen as wild, ugly, and unacceptable. In most versions of the tale, she was beheaded. Her dripping blood became her children. So Medusa, who was violated, was furious and heartbroken. Medusa, like many of us, was misunderstood.

One of the most powerful stories has Medusa making herself ugly and undesirable with a stone power gaze to keep herself safe. In this world of 10,000 things, everything is currency, especially beauty. Ugliness is the threat that looms for womenfolk. Disobey the rules and you are repulsive. Follow your own path and it may make you ugly. Don’t buy the recommended products and ugliness may emerge. And of course, never ever age. But the only true ugliness is cheating us of your real beauty.

Medusa is a version of the goddess Neith. Neith is the Egyptian goddess who the Greeks modeled Athena after. In one depiction of Neith, she has the head of a serpent and is a triple goddess. Medusa was a triple goddess Gorgon with her immortal sisters, Stheno and Euryale. Medusa’s people, the Berbers, worshipped Neith. Neith was the prime creator who wove the universe into existence on her loom. As a hunter and the goddess of war, her symbol was the bow and arrow. Neith also helped to settle major disputes. She could give birth without a partner, and there were images of her nursing a crocodile. She was wise, warlike, and just.

Medusa’s anger is sacred rage. You have a right to your righteous rage, but don’t let it eat you alive. Don’t lose your humanity. You have a right to your love, vulnerability, and healing as well.
